Protein
The amount of protein that is perfect for you depend on many factors. These factors include:
- Your current nutritional status
- Your stage of kidney disease progression (see table above on stage and scope of kidney disease)
- Your weight
Protein needs are calculated by weight in kilograms.
The most commonly recommended protein amount for most
patients at CKD Stages 3 through 5 is 0.6 to 0.8 g of
protein per kilogram. Therefore, if you are a 200-pound
person, you can follow these steps to determine the
correct amount of protein per day:
- 200 / 2.2 = 91kg (divide your current weight in
pounds by 2.2 to convert it to kg)
- 91kg x 0.6g/kg = 54.6 g of protein per day (Take
your weight in kg and multiply this by 0.6 to 0.8g of
protein)
Of this amount, 50-60% should come from high quality
proteins such as eggs, chicken, beef, turkey, or
fish. Milk is also a source of protein. One cup of milk
or 8 ounces of yogurt = 8 grams of protein. Grains and
legumes also have protein; however, this protein is not
as high of quality. Typically, one slice of bread or 1/2
cup of pasta has about 3 grams of protein.
Remember to always discuss your protein intake and
dietary choices with your health care provider as
different individuals may have different nutritional
needs. A dietitian who specializes in kidney disease is
a great person to have this discussion with!
